College Park, Maryland
College Park is best known as the home of the University of Maryland. Many of the College Park's residents are University of Maryland students, faculty, and staff. Population in July 2008 was 26,925, an increase of 9.2% since 2000. College Park is conveniently located inside the Capital Beltway (I-495) along US Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) and served by the College Park-University of Maryland stop on the Metrorail Green Line. In additional to the University s Shuttle-UM system, the area is served by a MARC train and numerous metro-area transit system buses.
In recent years, the city has experienced a boom in student housing development, with eight apartment buildings either already operating or under construction along the Route 1 corridor. Other development projects are being explored, such as the East Campus area that is bordered by Route 1 and Paint Branch Parkway. There are many high quality, student-friendly off-campus communities available in the college park area to choose from.
Along with this residential development has come a growth in the shopping market. There are several shopping areas with plenty of restaurants, common fast-food chains, convenience and specialty stores. Some stores, such as IKEA and REI, a recreational equipment store, attract shoppers from miles around. Other 'big-box' stores are nearby, including Target, Home Depot, and Best Buy.
